Betty L Newman
WHEELERSBURG-Betty L. Newman, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2023 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth, OH. Betty was born March 18, 1936, the daughter of the late Forrest Kyle and Alcinda M. Miller Boggs. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, James I. Newman, Sr. of Wheelersburg, OH. Mrs. Newman was a graduate and Valedictorian of Decatur-Washington Schools. At the age of 17, she was the Sesquicentennial Queen. After graduation, she worked at the Piketon Atomic Energy Plant, Portsmouth Banking Company, and Walmart. She attended Sciotodale and Garden City Free Will Baptist churches, she served as a Sunday School teacher and Children’s Bible School Director at Garden City Free Will Baptist Church. Betty was fearless and independent, yet compassionate. She enjoyed cooking, flower gardening, and shopping. She was strong-willed and resilient, but those traits defined Betty, our mom, and grandmother. They were part of who she was, and her strength undoubtedly helped her deal with life’s challenges. She was a proud mom and a proud grandmother; she instilled in her children: “Do it right the first time and you won’t have to do it over.” In addition to her husband, Betty is survived by; son and daughter-in-law, James (Fritz) and Alice Newman of Minford, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Denise (Kevin) Callihan of Lancaster, Ohio; two brothers, Forrest (Betty Jean) Boggs of Pedro, Roger (Rebecca) Boggs of Pedro; ten grandchildren, Melissa (Scott) Artis of Portsmouth, Ohio, Joseph (Alicia) Newman of Missouri City, Texas, Joshua (Sarah) Newman of State College, Pennsylvania, Shane Sammons (Leanne) of Portsmouth, Ohio, Logan M. Newman, of Eugene, Oregon, Jack N. Newman of Bowling Green, Ohio, Nic Newman of Gahanna, Ohio, Chrystal (Todd) McCain of South Shore, Kentucky, Sarah (Ben) Hamilton of Bentonville, Arkansas and Rodney (Sarah) Hamilton of Rosemount, Ohio; eight great-grandchildren and four great, great grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her beloved son, Paul Stephen Newman, one sister, Camilla “Kay” Ruth and two brothers, Harold Boggs, and Keith Boggs. A special thank you to all the caregivers, especially Carol, that made a difference for Mom.
Services for Betty will be 1:00 pm Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Harrison-Pyles Funeral Home in Wheelersburg with Pastor Aaron Reed officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park.
